Biography
Anmatyerre / Alyawarre, b. 1975 Charmaine Pwerle is a Utopia artist and the daughter of Barbara Weir and granddaughter of Minnie Pwerle. She belongs to one of the most recognised matriarchal lineages in Utopia painting. Born in the Utopia region according to Delmore Gallery, she grew up between Utopia and other centres including Adelaide, before returning to Central Australia. Dreaming & Country: Awelye Charmaine’s main subject is Awelye, the women’s ceremonial body paint designs associated with Atnwengerrp and Utopia Country. Her work continues ceremonial subjects passed through her family, particularly the women’s painting tradition associated with Minnie Pwerle and Barbara Weir. Style and Technique Charmaine’s paintings are structured through bold linear movement, repeated ceremonial forms and layered colour. The work sits within the Utopia tradition while carrying a distinct hand: direct, graphic and rhythmically composed. Charmaine’s Palette Her palette often includes black, white, red, orange, pink, purple and earth tones. In some works, strong contrast gives the body-paint designs a clear architectural structure; in others, colour is layered more densely across the surface. For the Collector Charmaine Pwerle’s work is grounded in a significant Utopia family lineage. She is represented by galleries including Delmore Gallery and Japingka Aboriginal Art Gallery. Her practice continues the Awelye tradition associated with her grandmother Minnie Pwerle and mother Barbara Weir.
