Biography
Pintupi, b. 1988 Angus Tjungurrayi is a Pintupi artist from Kiwirrkura. He is the son of Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri and Yalti Napangati, both members of the Pintupi Nine. He lives and works in Kiwirrkura, one of the most remote communities in the Western Desert. Dreaming & Country: Wilkinkarra / Tingari Angus paints Pintupi stories connected to Wilkinkarra / Lake Mackay and the Tingari song-cycle. These subjects relate to ancestral journeys, ceremonial knowledge and the deep cultural geography of Pintupi Country. Style and Technique Angus’s paintings are built through repeated line, optical movement and tightly controlled fields. His work is connected to the visual language of his father, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, while reflecting his own approach to structure, rhythm and surface. Angus’s Palette His palette often uses strong tonal contrast, particularly black, white and restrained desert colours. The emphasis is on line, repetition and optical movement rather than broad colour variation. For the Collector Angus Tjungurrayi belongs to a significant Pintupi family lineage as the son of Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri and Yalti Napangati. He began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 2017 and has been shown by galleries including Station Gallery and Short St Gallery.
