Biography
Mudburra, b. 1994 Arthur (Jalyirri) Dixon is a Mudburra artist from Marlinja, near Elliott in the Northern Territory. He grew up in a creative family where music, storytelling and language were central to cultural life. His father, Ray Dimakarri Dixon, and sister, Eleanor Jawurlngali Dixon, are singer-songwriters, and Arthur’s own practice moves between contemporary painting, Mudburra knowledge and the country surrounding Marlinja. Country: Ngurramarla Arthur’s paintings are associated with ngurramarla, a Mudburra term connected to country, water, rain, storm and environmental force. His work draws from the experience of living on Mudburra Country and from inherited cultural knowledge held through family, language and place. Style and Technique Arthur’s paintings are gestural, atmospheric and strongly physical. He often works across large-scale surfaces, using broad movement, layered marks and open fields of colour. The paintings do not rely on traditional dotting or tight iconographic mapping; they sit closer to abstraction, with country carried through movement, weather, surface and scale. Arthur’s Palette Arthur’s palette often includes black, white, grey, ochre, red, blue, green and earth-based tones. Colour is usually handled atmospherically, with washes, veils and stronger gestural marks creating depth across the surface. For the Collector Arthur (Jalyirri) Dixon is an emerging Mudburra artist whose work has been shown in Melbourne Art Fair and in Ngandayi, a 2024 exhibition with Ray Dimakarri Dixon and Eleanor Jawurlngali Dixon at 8 Hele Gallery, Alice Springs. Ngandayi marked the first time the three family members exhibited together as visual artists.
